Matthew 25:1

The kingdom of heaven refers to God’s sovereign rule, both present and future, and is compared to ten virgins. The ten virgins represent individuals who profess faith in Christ, symbolizing believers or the church, and the number ten may signify completeness or a full representation of the believing community.
Lamps were essential for nighttime processions in biblical times, representing the outward expression of faith. The virgins’ action of going forth to meet the bridegroom reflects Jewish wedding customs, where the bridegroom would come to the bride’s house for the marriage feast, indicating anticipation and readiness.
Key themes include readiness and spiritual preparedness for Christ’s return. The parable distinguishes between wise and foolish virgins based on their preparedness. The wise virgins took extra oil, while the foolish did not. The oil symbolizes spiritual readiness, including the sustaining grace and the Holy Spirit necessary for a faithful relationship with Christ.
While the bridegroom was delayed, all the virgins slumbered and slept, illustrating the unknown timing of Christ’s return and the need for ongoing vigilance. At midnight a cry announced the bridegroom’s arrival, serving as a wake‑up call for preparation.
The wise virgins, having prepared adequately, entered the marriage feast with the bridegroom. The foolish virgins, lacking sufficient oil, were unable to join when the door was shut. Jesus concludes with the instruction, “Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh,” emphasizing the necessity of constant spiritual readiness.
