Matthew 26:30

Posted on 18 May at 14:49

“And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.”

Context:The Last Supper was a significant moment in Jesus’ ministry. It took place just before His crucifixion and marked the establishment of the new covenant through His body and blood. It was also the occasion where Jesus predicted His betrayal by one of His disciples.

Singing a hymn:After the meal, it is mentioned that Jesus and His disciples sang a hymn together. The exact hymn they sang is not specified in the text. However, it is believed to be the Hallel, a collection of Psalms (Psalm 113-118) traditionally sung during Jewish feasts, including Passover. This demonstrates Jesus’ observance of Jewish customs and His fulfilment of the Law.

Mount of Olives:Following the hymn, Jesus and His disciples left for the Mount of Olives. This location, situated east of Jerusalem, held special significance for Jesus. It was a place where He often retreated for prayer and reflection, as well as the site where He would be arrested later that evening.

Symbolism and Spiritual Lessons:This verse holds several symbolic and spiritual lessons:

  • Unity and Fellowship:The act of singing a hymn together highlights the unity and fellowship among Jesus and His disciples. It reminds us of the importance of communal worship and shared experiences in our Christian journey.
  • Jesus’ Obedience and Sacrifice:Jesus willingly moved forward to fulfil God’s plan for salvation, even though He knew the suffering and betrayal that awaited Him. His actions on the Mount of Olives reveal His obedience and the depth of His sacrifice for humanity.
  • Preparation for Gethsemane:The mention of the Mount of Olives prepares us for the subsequent events in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus would pray and agonize over His impending crucifixion. The departure to the Mount of Olives sets the stage for these crucial moments of Jesus’ final hours.

Overall, Matthew 26:30 provides a glimpse into the emotional and spiritual atmosphere surrounding Jesus and His disciples during the Last Supper. It underscores themes of unity, obedience, and preparation for the forthcoming crucifixion. This verse invites us to reflect on the significance of Jesus’ sacrifice and His example of unwavering commitment to God’s plan of redemption.
