Matthew 26:61
And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.
Matthew 26:61 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ trial before the high priest and the Sanhedrin, following His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. False witnesses were brought forward to testify against Jesus, and in Matthew 26:61, we find their statement.
Meaning
In this verse, the false witnesses misquote Jesus, claiming that He said, “I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.” However, this accusation is a distortion of Jesus’ actual words, which were spoken in a different context. The misquote refers back to an earlier event recorded in John 2:19-22. During the early days of Jesus’ ministry, He cleansed the temple in Jerusalem and, in response to a challenge from the religious leaders for a sign to prove His authority, Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up” (John 2:19, KJV). However, Jesus was speaking metaphorically, referring to His own body as the temple that would be raised from the dead after His crucifixion.
The false witnesses in Matthew 26:61 take Jesus’ words out of context, removing the symbolic meaning of His statement. They present it as a literal claim that Jesus made about destroying and rebuilding the physical temple. Their intention is to provide false evidence against Jesus and incriminate Him during His trial.
Biblical connections
The Gospel of John clarifies that Jesus was speaking of the temple of His body, and that after His resurrection, His disciples remembered this saying. The accusation does injury to both Jesus’ words and His sense: He did not say, “I am able to destroy the temple,” but rather spoke of what others would do, and He spoke of raising it up, not merely building it.
Application
This verse highlights the lengths to which Jesus’ enemies went to find any grounds for accusing Him falsely. It serves as a reminder of the opposition and hostility Jesus faced from the religious authorities of His time.
Reflection
The contrast between the false accusation and the true identity of Jesus is striking. His resurrection on the third day would be the ultimate sign of His authority, confirming that He is the Son of God.
