Matthew 4:19
“And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Call to Follow Jesus:In this verse, Jesus initiates His invitation to Peter and Andrew to become His disciples. By saying, “Follow me,” Jesus is extending an invitation to them to leave their current occupations and lifestyles to follow Him. This call to follow Jesus is not limited to Peter and Andrew alone but extends to all believers throughout time.
Discipleship:When Jesus asks Peter and Andrew to follow Him, He is calling them to become His disciples. Discipleship involves not only following Jesus but also learning from Him, being transformed by Him, and becoming more like Him in character and purpose. It requires a commitment to walk in His ways, surrendering one’s life to Him completely.
The Purpose of Discipleship:Jesus tells Peter and Andrew, “I will make you fishers of men.” Here, Jesus reveals the purpose of discipleship. Just as Peter and Andrew were skilled fishermen, Jesus intends to transform them into people who would draw others to Himself. They would become instruments in God’s hands to bring people into a relationship with Him and share the good news of the Gospel.
Fishers of Men:The analogy of fishing is used to describe the work of disciples in reaching out to others. Just as fishermen cast their nets to catch fish, disciples are called to actively engage in sharing the message of salvation and drawing people to Jesus. They are to become skilled in communicating the truth, showing love and compassion, and guiding others toward a life of faith.
Evangelism and Mission:This verse highlights the importance of evangelism and the mission of spreading the Gospel. Jesus wants His followers to actively participate in the work of reaching out to others, sharing the good news of salvation, and making disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20).
Overall, Matthew 4:19 emphasizes the call to follow Jesus and become His disciples. It conveys the purpose of discipleship, which is to become “fishers of men” by actively engaging in evangelism and spreading the message of salvation. This verse challenges believers to respond to Jesus’ call and to actively participate in the mission of drawing people to Him.
