Matthew 5:6

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”

Context:Matthew 5:6 is part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, where He delivers several teachings on various aspects of living a godly life. In this particular verse, Jesus describes the blessing upon those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.

Hunger and Thirst:Hunger and thirst are essential physical needs that sustain life. Jesus uses these vivid metaphors to describe a deep longing or desire. Here, it refers to a spiritual longing or yearning for righteousness, which means living in accordance with God’s will and being morally upright.

Blessed:The term “blessed” can be understood as being spiritually fortunate, happy, or content. It signifies the state of divine favour and well-being. In this context, it is a promise of God’s approval and provision to those who possess a fervent desire for righteousness.

Righteousness:Righteousness refers to a right standing before God and conformity to His standards. It involves living a life characterised by integrity, justice, and obedience to God’s commandments. It also includes seeking justice and showing compassion to others. True righteousness is not merely external adherence to rules but also a genuine heart transformation.

Filled:Jesus assures that those who hunger and thirst after righteousness will be filled. This filling implies both satisfaction and abundance. When individuals earnestly seek after righteousness, God promises to satisfy their spiritual hunger and provide what they need. It may include spiritual nourishment, growth, and a sense of fulfilment in their relationship with God.

Application:Matthew 5:6 encourages believers to cultivate a passionate pursuit of righteousness. Here are some key lessons we can draw from this verse:

  • Spiritual Hunger:We should hunger and thirst for a deeper relationship with God and a greater understanding of His Word. This hunger prompts us to seek His righteousness and align our lives with His will.
  • Prioritise Righteousness:Our pursuit of righteousness should be a priority in our lives. It involves a commitment to live according to God’s principles, both in our actions and our attitudes.
  • Dependence on God:Recognise that our hunger for righteousness comes from God’s work within us. We need to rely on His grace and guidance to grow in righteousness, knowing that it is God who enables and empowers us.
  • Promised Fulfilment:Trust in God’s promise of satisfaction and abundance. As we earnestly seek righteousness, God will meet our spiritual needs, filling us with His presence, wisdom, and blessings.
  • Impact on Others:Our pursuit of righteousness should extend beyond ourselves. It should inspire us to seek justice, show mercy, and be a positive influence in the lives of others.
