Matthew 5:6 is the fourth beatitude in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, where He teaches His disciples and the crowd about life in the kingdom of heaven. The verse pronounces a blessing on those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, promising that they shall be filled. This structure—a condition followed by a promise—marks the character of a kingdom citizen and gives divine assurance.

Meaning

Hunger and thirst are essential, life-sustaining needs. Jesus uses these vivid metaphors to describe an intense, ongoing spiritual longing, not a casual wish. The Greek word translated “blessed” conveys spiritual well-being and divine favour, not merely temporary happiness. Righteousness here is not the moral or legal righteousness pursued by the religious leaders of the day, nor is it merely human justice. It is the justifying righteousness of Christ, imputed by God the Father and received by faith. To hunger and thirst after this righteousness means recognising our own lack and need, desiring a right relationship with God, and longing to live according to His will.

The promise “they shall be filled” assures that God will completely satisfy this spiritual hunger and thirst. This filling implies both satisfaction and abundance—spiritual nourishment, growth, and fulfilment in relationship with God. True blessedness is found not in self-sufficiency but in humble, desperate dependence on God’s provision. The righteousness God gives is a gift of grace, not a human achievement.

Our pursuit of righteousness should be a priority, involving commitment to God’s principles in both actions and attitudes. Recognise that this hunger comes from God’s work within us; we rely on His grace and guidance to grow in righteousness. Trust in God’s promise of satisfaction and abundance—as we earnestly seek Him, He will fill us with His presence, wisdom, and blessings. Our pursuit should also extend beyond ourselves, inspiring us to seek justice, show mercy, and be a positive influence in the lives of others.
