Matthew 7:24

Posted on 18 May at 14:51

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock”

Context:To fully grasp the meaning of this verse, it is important to understand its context within the Sermon on the Mount. In the preceding verses, Jesus speaks about the importance of discerning false prophets by their fruits and warns against self-deception. He emphasizes the significance of obedience and genuine faith. In verse 24, Jesus concludes His teaching with a parable.

Hearing and Doing:Jesus begins by stating, “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them.” The emphasis here is on both hearing and doing. It is not enough to simply listen to the words of Jesus; true wisdom lies in applying His teachings in our lives. Jesus desires His followers to internalize His teachings and put them into practice.

Building on a Rock:Jesus compares the person who hears and does His sayings to a wise man who builds his house upon a rock. In ancient times, building a house on solid ground, such as a rock foundation, was crucial for stability and endurance. It represents a secure and unshakable foundation.

Symbolism:Symbolically, the rock represents Jesus Christ Himself. In other parts of the Bible, Jesus is referred to as the Rock (1 Corinthians 10:4; Psalm 18:2). Building our lives upon Him ensures stability, strength, and durability. By adhering to His teachings, we establish a foundation that can withstand the storms and challenges of life.

Practical Application:This verse encourages believers to not only listen to Jesus’ words but to put them into practice. It highlights the importance of obedience and a living faith. To build our lives on the rock, we must seek to align our thoughts, attitudes, and actions with the teachings of Jesus. This involves studying the Scriptures, praying for guidance, and relying on the Holy Spirit to empower us to live according to God’s will.

  • Contrast with Building on Sand:In the following verses (Matthew 7:26-27), Jesus presents a contrasting scenario of a foolish man who builds his house on sand. When the storms come, the house built on sand collapses. This signifies the instability and vulnerability of a life not built upon the rock of Jesus’ teachings.

Final Thoughts:Matthew 7:24 reminds us that true wisdom lies in hearing and doing the words of Jesus. Building our lives on the solid foundation of Christ and His teachings enables us to weather the storms of life. It emphasizes the importance of a genuine, obedient, and active faith.
