Matthew 7:25

And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

This verse concludes the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus contrasts two kinds of hearers. The wise man is the one who hears His words and does them, as stated in Matthew 7:24. The house built on a rock pictures a life that puts Jesus’ teaching into practice.

Meaning

The wise man represents a person who hears Jesus’ teachings and applies them to life. Building on a rock signifies a firm spiritual foundation. The Greek phrase translated “founded upon a rock” uses a perfect tense, indicating a completed action with continuing results: the house had been and remained founded on the rock. This points to Christ as the sure and immovable foundation.

The rain, floods, and winds represent the adversities believers face, such as temptations, persecution, personal hardships, and false teachings. These forces test the foundation of one’s faith. The house that did not fall shows that the person who hears and obeys Christ can stand firm through life’s storms, remaining spiritually unshaken.

Biblical connections

The parallel account in Luke 6:47-49 reinforces the same lesson. The contrast with the foolish man in Matthew 7:26, who builds on sand and suffers a great fall, underscores the necessity of a proper foundation.
