Matthew 9:19

Listen to this article

And Iesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples. Matthew 9:19 (KJV)

In Matthew 9:18 a ruler approaches Jesus, addressing Him as “Master,” and asks for His help, saying that his daughter has just died. The ruler’s faith is evident as he believes that if Jesus lays His hand on his daughter, she will live. Jesus, accompanied by His disciples, immediately follows the ruler to his house. This verse belongs to the larger passage of Matthew 9:18‑26, which records two miraculous healings: the ruler’s daughter and a woman suffering from a hemorrhage.

Verse Analysis:

Jesus arose – the phrase highlights Jesus’ readiness and willingness to respond to the ruler’s plea. He is not passive but actively engaged in meeting the needs of those who seek Him. Followed him – Jesus chooses to accompany the ruler to his home, demonstrating compassion and a desire to minister personally rather than sending a messenger. His disciples – the disciples, who have walked with Jesus throughout His ministry, also follow Him. Their presence reflects a commitment to imitate their Master, to participate in His ministry, and to learn firsthand from the miracles He performs.

Themes and Lessons:

Jesus’ compassion and availability – the verse shows Jesus’ prompt response to distress, encouraging believers to bring their needs to Him, confident that He cares and is ready to help. Discipleship and learning – the disciples’ following underscores the importance of being active followers of Christ, observing His actions, and growing in faith and knowledge of God through close association. The power of Jesus’ presence – the very presence of Jesus and His disciples brings transformation, as seen in the healing of the ruler’s daughter. This reminds believers that inviting Christ into our circumstances allows His authority to bring restoration and change.
