Micah 2:1

Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.

Micah 2:1 (KJV)

Micah prophesied in the eighth century BC, confronting social injustices in Israel and Judah. This verse opens a section of judgment, following a lament over captivity and preceding a charge that the powerful covet fields and houses, oppressing a man and his heritage.

The verse pronounces a divine “woe” upon those who devise iniquity and work evil upon their beds. At night they plan harm, and when morning light comes, they carry it out because it is in the power of their hand. This is premeditated sin, not a sudden failure. The phrase “in the power of their hand” indicates both ability and opportunity, used without hesitation. The “woe” is a prophetic declaration of grief and impending judgment from God.

The pattern of planning evil at night and executing it by day echoes the broader biblical teaching that God sees the heart’s intentions and holds people accountable. The verse also connects to the surrounding passage, where coveting fields and houses leads to violent oppression, showing that the sin harms real people and violates God’s standards of justice.

Readers should examine their own thoughts and plans. Do we harbor evil schemes, or do we use our power and resources for good? The verse warns against allowing wrong desires to take root and be acted upon, calling for repentance and a deliberate choice to guard the heart so that our hands are used for righteousness rather than oppression.

God sees the intentions of the heart and will bring judgment. This truth invites us to live with integrity, not only in public actions but also in private thoughts, knowing that nothing is hidden from Him.
