Thy grauen images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee: & thou shalt no more worship the worke of thine hands. Micah 5:13 (KJV)

Micah was a prophet who lived during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. He prophesied in the eighth century BC and spoke against the social injustices, idolatry, and corruption prevalent in his time. Micah 5 is part of the book of Micah, one of the Minor Prophets in the Old Testament. In Micah 5, the prophet speaks of the future ruler who will come from Bethlehem. This ruler is understood by Christians as the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Verse 2 of the same chapter is often quoted during the Christmas season, as it predicts the birthplace of Jesus: “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” Micah 5:13 states: “I will cut off thy graven images out of the midst of thee; and thy standing images: and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.” This verse focuses on the removal of idols and false worship. While Micah 5:13 does not describe divine judgment, the book of Micah does contain passages that speak of God’s judgment against the nations (e.g., Micah 5:14‑15). Moving to verse 15, the verse states: “And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen, such as they have not heard.” This emphasizes God’s judgment upon the nations that oppose Him. It’s important to note that while Micah addresses divine judgment, the book also contains messages of hope, restoration, and the promise of a future Messianic reign. Micah speaks about the coming of the Messiah and the establishment of God’s Kingdom, which will bring peace, righteousness, and justice to the world. In summary, Micah 5:13 in the KJV speaks of removing idols and false worship, while Micah 5:15 describes God’s execution of vengeance upon the nations, emphasizing His justice and ultimate authority.
