Listen to this article

“Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob, and the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old.”

Context:Micah was a prophet who delivered his messages to the people of Judah during the 8th century BC. The book of Micah contains prophecies about both judgment and hope for God’s people. Micah 7:20 is found towards the end of the book, specifically in the last verse.

Promise to Jacob:In this verse, the Lord declares that He will perform the truth to Jacob. Jacob, also known as Israel, was the forefather of the twelve tribes of Israel. This promise signifies God’s faithfulness to fulfill the covenant made with Jacob and his descendants. It emphasizes God’s commitment to keeping His word.

Mercy to Abraham:The verse also mentions that God will show mercy to Abraham. Abraham was the father of the nation of Israel and was known for his faith and obedience to God. The promise of mercy to Abraham reflects God’s loving-kindness and compassion towards His chosen people.

Sworn unto our fathers:The verse acknowledges that the promises made to Jacob and Abraham were sworn to the fathers of the Israelites from ancient times. This highlights the continuity of God’s faithfulness throughout generations. The reference to “our fathers” suggests that Micah, as a prophet, was speaking on behalf of the people of his time, reminding them of the enduring nature of God’s promises.

Application:Micah 7:20 serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and His commitment to fulfill His promises. It reassures the people of God’s enduring love, mercy, and truth. It encourages believers to trust in God’s character and rely on His promises even in difficult times.

  • Overall, Micah 7:20 emphasises the unchanging nature of God and His covenant with His people. It assures us that God will fulfil His promises and demonstrates His mercy and faithfulness throughout generations. As we study this verse, we can find encouragement to trust in God’s word and rely on His steadfast love.
