Micah 7:6

For the sonne dishonoureth the father: the daughter riseth vp against her mother: the daughter in law against her mother in law; a mans enemies are the men of his owne house. Micah 7:6 (KJV)

Context: Micah was a prophet during the eighth century B.C., and he prophesied against the sins and injustices of the people of Israel and Judah. In the preceding verses of Micah 7, the prophet laments the prevailing corruption and lack of justice in the society.

Family Disruption: In Micah 7:6, the prophet describes a distressing picture of societal breakdown, particularly within families. It highlights the breakdown of traditional family relationships and the erosion of trust and loyalty among family members.

Disrespect and Dishonor: The verse begins by stating that the son dishonors his father. In ancient Eastern cultures, respect for parents was highly valued and considered a fundamental virtue. Here, the breakdown of this relationship represents a violation of one of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:12).

Daughter against Mother: Micah continues by stating that the daughter rises up against her mother. This illustrates the erosion of filial piety and the breakdown of the mother‑daughter bond. It signifies a collapse of the fundamental familial unit and the abandonment of the values of love and unity.

Daughter‑in‑Law against Mother‑in‑Law: The verse further reveals that the daughter‑in‑law is against her mother‑in‑law. This highlights the conflict and tension that can arise in the extended family. It suggests that even within the most intimate relationships, divisions and animosity can occur.

Betrayal from Within: Finally, the verse concludes by stating that a man’s enemies are the men of his own house. This indicates that one’s greatest adversaries may not be external foes but rather members of one’s own family. It signifies the profound level of betrayal that can occur when trust is shattered within the closest relationships.

Application:

Micah 7:6 serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of sin and injustice on the fabric of society and the breakdown of relationships. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining strong family bonds, practising respect, and fostering love and unity within our families. It also highlights the need for repentance and reconciliation when conflicts arise within our households.

In conclusion, Micah 7:6 portrays the distressing reality of familial breakdown and the erosion of trust and loyalty. It underscores the importance of upholding the values of respect, love, and unity within our families, and reminds us of the need for repentance and reconciliation when conflicts arise.
