Nahum 1:10

For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

Nahum 1:10 (KJV)

Nahum prophesied to Judah, announcing the impending destruction of Nineveh, the Assyrian capital. The Assyrians were known for cruelty and oppression, and Nahum’s message declared that God would bring decisive judgment upon them for their wickedness.

Nahum 1:10 uses three vivid similes to portray Nineveh’s fate. “Folden together as thorns” depicts the Assyrians as sharp, tangled, and seemingly defensive, yet ultimately vulnerable—bundled together, they are prepared for destruction and unable to escape the fire. “Drunken as drunkards” illustrates their excessive pride and arrogance, likening them to intoxicated men who have lost judgment and become easy prey. “Devoured as stubble fully dry” compares the nation to dry stalks that are quickly consumed by fire, emphasizing the swift and total nature of their downfall. The verse underscores that the wicked, despite apparent strength, are utterly powerless before God’s judgment.

God’s judgment is just and certain; persistent wickedness brings inevitable consequences. The image of drunkenness warns that pride blinds and exposes to ruin, urging humility before God. The destruction of a mighty empire demonstrates that no earthly power can withstand God’s sovereign might.

Examine areas of personal pride and seek to cultivate humble dependence on God, treating others with kindness. Rest assured that, even when evil seems to prosper, God’s justice will ultimately prevail and hold all accountable. Find comfort in the knowledge that God’s strength surpasses every challenge; rely on His power for protection and restoration.

God’s judgment on Nineveh was a message of hope for Judah, who had suffered under Assyrian oppression. Believers today can trust that God sees oppression and will act in His perfect timing, bringing justice and deliverance to His people.
