And said, I beseech thee, O Lord God of heauen, the great and terrible God, that keepeth couenant and mercie for them that loue him, and obserue his commandements: Nehemiah 1:5 (KJV)

Nehemiah 1:5 is part of the prayer of Nehemiah, the central figure in the book of Nehemiah. This verse reflects Nehemiah’s humble and reverent approach as he begins his prayer to God.

Recognition of God’s Greatness: Nehemiah begins by addressing God as the “LORD God of heaven.” This acknowledgment highlights Nehemiah’s awareness of God’s sovereignty and his understanding that God rules over all things. By emphasizing God’s heavenly authority, Nehemiah recognizes that he is approaching the Creator of the universe.

Reverence for God’s Character: Nehemiah describes God as both “great” and “terrible.” The term “great” signifies God’s magnificence, power, and majesty. It emphasizes the awe‑inspiring nature of God. The term “terrible” does not mean God is fearsome or scary, but rather it conveys a sense of reverence and awe for His holiness and righteousness. Nehemiah’s use of these words reflects his deep respect for God and his understanding of His character.

Faithfulness to His Covenant: Nehemiah acknowledges that God is a God who keeps His covenant. Throughout the Bible, God establishes covenants with His people, promising His faithfulness and blessings in return for their obedience and love. Nehemiah understands that God’s covenant is not only a promise of mercy and grace but also a call to love and obedience from His people. This recognition encourages Nehemiah to seek God’s favor and intervention.

God’s Mercy and Love: Nehemiah acknowledges that God shows mercy to those who love Him and observe His commandments. This verse reveals Nehemiah’s understanding that obedience and love for God go hand in hand. God’s mercy is not earned through works alone but is granted to those who wholeheartedly love and obey Him. Nehemiah recognizes the importance of aligning his own actions with God’s commandments as he seeks God’s favor in his mission.
