Micah, Rehob, Hashabiah, Nehemiah 10:11 (KJV)

The book of Nehemiah is set during the time of the Israelites’ return from the Babylonian exile. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king, received news about the condition of Jerusalem and was burdened to rebuild the walls of the city. Through God’s guidance and Nehemiah’s leadership, the walls were successfully rebuilt in a remarkable 52 days.

Nehemiah 10:11 is part of a list of individuals who signed a covenant, committing themselves to follow the Law of God. The covenant made by the people of Jerusalem, including Malchijah and Hashub, demonstrates their commitment to follow God’s law. It serves as a reminder of the importance of consciously living according to God’s principles.

Nehemiah 3:25 states, “Malchijah the son of Harim, and Hashub the son of Pahath‑moab, repaired the other piece, and the tower of the furnaces.” The actual reference for the repair work of “the other piece, and the tower of the furnaces” is Nehemiah 12:44, where Malchijah and Hashub are noted among those who carried out that specific construction task. The mention of the “other piece” and the “tower of the furnaces” likely refers to specific sections of the wall or certain structures within the city that required repair and restoration. The tower of the furnaces could be associated with the furnaces used for various purposes, such as metalworking or baking, within the city.

Malchijah the son of Harim is mentioned elsewhere in the Bible, particularly in Ezra 10:31, where he is listed among those who had married foreign women during the exile and were compelled to separate from them. In Nehemiah 12:44, he is mentioned as one who was involved in the repair of a section of the city wall. Hashub the son of Pahath‑moab is also mentioned in Ezra 10:33 as one who had taken a foreign wife. Like Malchijah, he participated in the repair work on the city wall, as recorded in Nehemiah 12:44. Despite their previous transgressions, these individuals were now actively engaged in rebuilding and reconciling with God.

Malchijah and Hashub’s involvement in rebuilding the city walls represents the restoration of God’s people, teaching us about renewal and reconciliation even after spiritual setbacks. This signifies his dedication to the physical restoration of Jerusalem, symbolizing the restoration of God’s people. It teaches us about the possibility of renewal and reconciliation even after experiencing personal or spiritual setbacks. We can find encouragement in knowing that God’s grace is available for us to rebuild and repair areas of our lives that may have been broken or damaged.

The willingness of these individuals to engage in the physical work of rebuilding the wall encourages us to actively contribute to the work of God’s kingdom. Whether it is through serving in our local church, supporting the needs of others, or sharing the gospel, we are called to participate actively and faithfully in the work God has set before us. Their active participation in the physical work of rebuilding encourages believers to engage faithfully in God’s kingdom work, whether through service, support, or evangelism.

In conclusion, Nehemiah 10:11 reminds us of the covenant made by the people of Jerusalem, while Nehemiah 12:44 highlights the concrete contribution of Malchijah and Hashub to the restoration of Jerusalem. Their dedication encourages us to be faithful in following God’s law, pursuing restoration, and engaging wholeheartedly in His kingdom‑building activities.
