Listen to this article

“And their brethren, Shebaniah, Hodijah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan,”

Context:Nehemiah is a book in the Old Testament that records the efforts of Nehemiah to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. Chapter 10 focuses on the renewal of the covenant between God and the people of Israel.

Significance of the verse:Nehemiah 10:10 is part of a list of names of individuals who were committing themselves to keeping God’s law and following His commandments. These individuals were making a covenant before God to live according to His standards.

Meaning of the names:– Shebaniah: The name means “the Lord has turned” or “the Lord has looked upon.”
– Hodijah: The name means “the Lord is my splendor” or “the Lord is my majesty.”
– Kelita: The name’s meaning is uncertain, but it could possibly mean “God’s protection” or “hidden.”
– Pelaiah: The name means “the Lord has distinguished” or “the Lord has set apart.”
– Hanan: The name means “gracious” or “merciful.”

Symbolic significance:The names in this verse reflect the spiritual condition and the mindset of the people who were entering into the covenant. They indicate the people’s desire for God to turn towards them, to experience His splendor and majesty, to seek His protection, to be set apart for His purposes, and to receive His grace and mercy.

  • Commitment to God:Nehemiah 10:10 reminds us of the importance of making a personal commitment to follow God’s commandments and live according to His will. Like the people in Nehemiah’s time, we should enter into a covenant relationship with God, surrendering our lives to Him and seeking His guidance and direction.
  • Seeking God’s favor:The names in Nehemiah 10:10 also express a desire for God’s favor and blessing. We should earnestly seek His presence, acknowledging His splendor and majesty. When we live in accordance with His will, we position ourselves to receive His protection, experience His grace, and be set apart for His purposes.
  • Embracing God’s character:The names in this verse emphasize God’s attributes, such as His mercy, grace, and distinguishing power. As we enter into a covenant with Him, we should strive to reflect His character in our lives. We should be merciful and gracious towards others, showing love and compassion as God has shown to us.
