Nehemiah 10:15

Listen to this article

“Nehemiah 10:15 (KJV): The children of Adin, four hundred fifty and four.”

Nehemiah 10:15 is a rather concise verse, and it may seem puzzling when taken out of context. To gain a better understanding, let’s explore the broader context of this verse within the book of Nehemiah.

The book of Nehemiah is set in the post-exilic period of Israel’s history, after the Babylonian exile. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes, led a group of Israelites back to Jerusalem to rebuild the city walls and restore the spiritual and social order of the people. The chapter containing verse 15 records a list of individuals who committed to following God’s law and making specific provisions for the maintenance of the temple and its worship.

In Nehemiah 10, the Israelites, including priests, Levites, and leaders, gathered together and affixed their seals to a covenant agreement. They pledged to walk in obedience to God’s commandments, reaffirming their commitment to the Mosaic Law and expressing their dedication to the worship of God. The verse in question, Nehemiah 10:15, specifically mentions the descendants of Adin-454 individuals who participated in making this commitment.

While this verse itself doesn’t provide much theological or moral instruction, it plays a role in documenting the collective commitment of the people of Israel to uphold the covenant and live according to God’s law. It demonstrates their desire for a renewed relationship with God and a commitment to faithful obedience.

As we examine Nehemiah 10 as a whole, we can draw several lessons and applications from this passage:

Covenant commitment:The verse highlights the importance of making a covenant with God and publicly declaring one’s commitment to follow His commands. It encourages believers to be intentional in their dedication to God and His Word.

Unity and community:The fact that a large number of people affixed their seals to the covenant indicates a sense of unity and communal responsibility. It reminds us of the significance of standing together in our faith, supporting one another, and working towards a common goal.

Obedience to God’s law:The Israelites’ commitment to obeying the Mosaic Law serves as a reminder of the importance of living in accordance with God’s instructions. As believers today, we are called to follow God’s commandments and seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives.

Faithful stewardship:Nehemiah 10 also outlines provisions for the upkeep of the temple, including financial support and the responsibility to provide for the temple service. This emphasizes the importance of faithful stewardship and giving back to God’s work.

Overall, Nehemiah 10:15 may seem brief and lacking in detail, but when viewed within the context of the chapter and the book as a whole, it becomes clear that this verse signifies a commitment by the descendants of Adin to honor God’s covenant and live in obedience to His law. It serves as a reminder for us to seek unity, remain faithful to God’s commandments, and be responsible stewards of what He has entrusted to us.
