“Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;”

Historical Context: Nehemiah was a prominent figure in the Old Testament, serving as the cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes I. In response to news about the destruction of Jerusalem’s walls and gates, Nehemiah received permission to return to Jerusalem and lead the rebuilding efforts. As the wall was being rebuilt, the people of Israel experienced spiritual revival and recommitment to God’s laws and covenant.

Significance of Nehemiah 10:

  • Significance of Nehemiah 10:

In Nehemiah 10, the people of Israel made a solemn covenant with God to follow His commandments and uphold their responsibilities towards Him. This chapter records the names of those who sealed the covenant, committing themselves to live according to God’s law and support the temple and its service.

Understanding Nehemiah 10:32:

Nehemiah 10:32 specifically highlights an ordinance made by the people. They agreed to contribute a yearly payment of one-third of a shekel for the service of the house of God. This contribution was intended to support the temple and the various needs associated with its service.

Symbolism and Spiritual Lessons:

  • Willingness to Support God’s Work:The people of Israel recognized the importance of supporting the service of the house of God. Their commitment to providing financial resources demonstrates their willingness to contribute to the maintenance and operation of the temple, which was essential for the worship and spiritual life of the community.
  • Regular Giving:The requirement of a yearly contribution emphasizes the importance of regular giving. It shows the people’s commitment to sustain the house of God continuously and not just through sporadic or occasional contributions. Regular giving enables the ongoing work of God’s house and ensures its proper functioning.
  • Proportionate Giving:The specific amount mentioned, one-third of a shekel, indicates a proportionate giving based on their income or resources. It suggests that each person gave according to their ability. This principle is applicable today, reminding believers to give in proportion to what God has blessed them with, recognizing that sacrificial giving is a reflection of their commitment to God.
  • Stewardship:The people acknowledged their responsibility to manage and allocate resources for the service of God’s house. This highlights the principle of stewardship, recognizing that all resources ultimately belong to God, and we are entrusted with managing them for His purposes.

Application:

  • Financial Support for God’s Work:Nehemiah 10:32 encourages believers to actively support the work of God’s house, which today can be understood as supporting the local church or other ministries dedicated to advancing God’s kingdom. Regular financial contributions enable the ministry to continue effectively.
  • Faithful and Proportionate Giving:This verse encourages believers to give faithfully and in proportion to what God has provided them. Whether through tithes, offerings, or other forms of giving, the principle of giving proportionately reflects a heart of gratitude and trust in God’s provision.
  • Responsible Stewardship:Nehemiah 10:32 reminds believers to be good stewards of their resources. Recognizing that all we have belongs to God, we should manage our finances and possessions wisely, dedicating a portion for God’s work and using the remainder for the benefit of others.

In conclusion, Nehemiah 10:32 showcases the commitment of the people of Israel to support the service of God’s house through regular and proportionate giving. This verse encourages believers today to faithfully contribute to the work of God’s kingdom and practice responsible stewardship of their resources.
