Nehemiah 10:33
For the shew-bread, and for the continuall meate-offering, and for the continuall burnt offering, of the Sabbaths, of the new moones, for the set-feastes, and for the holy things, and for the sin-offerings, to make an atonement for Israel, and for all the worke of the house of our God. Nehemiah 10:33 (KJV)
Nehemiah 10:33 is part of a larger passage describing the covenant renewal following the return from exile in Babylon. In this chapter the Israelites gather to renew their commitment to God’s law and covenant, pledging to follow His commandments and dedicate themselves to His service.
Showbread: The showbread refers to the twelve loaves of bread placed on the table in the Holy Place of the tabernacle and later in the temple. It was a symbol of God’s provision and the Israelites’ acknowledgment that their sustenance came from Him. By including the showbread in their dedication, the Israelites expressed their dependence on God for their daily needs.
Continual meat offering and burnt offering: The meat offering and burnt offering were regular sacrifices offered on the altar in the tabernacle or temple. The continual nature of these sacrifices signifies the Israelites’ commitment to maintaining the worship and sacrificial system prescribed by God. The burnt offering involved the shedding of blood to seek forgiveness and draw near to God, while the meat offering (a grain offering) represented devotion and thanksgiving through the presentation of firstfruits.
Sabbaths, new moons, and set feasts: These were important times of worship and celebration that God had established for His people. The Israelites committed to observing these appointed times, which included the weekly Sabbath, monthly new moons, and annual feasts such as Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles. By affirming their dedication to these sacred occasions, the Israelites acknowledged the significance of honoring God’s appointed times.
Holy things and sin offerings: The Israelites pledged to support the upkeep of the temple and provide for the needs of the priests and Levites responsible for the service of God. They also acknowledged the importance of sin offerings, which were sacrifices made to atone for sins committed unintentionally or unknowingly. The sin offerings symbolized the people’s repentance and their desire to maintain a right relationship with God.
Work of the house of God: This phrase refers to the various responsibilities associated with the maintenance and functioning of the temple. The Israelites committed themselves to providing the necessary resources and support to ensure the smooth operation of the temple and the worship of God.
In Nehemiah 10:33 we witness the Israelites’ determination to reestablish their covenant relationship with God by faithfully adhering to His commands and dedicating themselves to His service. This verse emphasizes the importance of worship, sacrifice, and obedience in the lives of God’s people.
