Nehemiah 3:21

After him repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah the son of Koz another piece, from the door of the house of Eliashib even to the end of the house of Eliashib.

Context

The book of Nehemiah is set after the Babylonian exile, during the Persian period when the Jewish people had returned to Jerusalem. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king, received news about the desolate state of Jerusalem’s walls, obtained permission from the king, and returned to rebuild the walls and gates. Chapter 3 gives a detailed account of the various individuals and groups who contributed to the rebuilding project.

Meaning

Meremoth is identified as the son of Urijah and the grandson of Koz. The phrase “another piece” shows that this was not his first assignment; he had already repaired a section of the wall earlier (Nehemiah 3:4). After completing that part, he returned to work on a second portion. This second section ran from the door of the house of Eliashib to the end of that house. Eliashib was the high priest at the time, and his house was apparently large, since the distance from its door to its end was considerable. The verse highlights Meremoth’s repeated and diligent service in the rebuilding effort. It also shows that the work was organized and assigned to specific individuals, with each person responsible for a particular stretch of the wall.
