Nehemiah 3:5

Posted on 18 May at 13:57

And uext vnto them, the Tekoites repaired; but their nobles put not their neckes to the worke of their Lord. Nehemiah 3:5 (KJV)

Context: Nehemiah 3 describes the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem under the leadership of Nehemiah. The walls had been destroyed and the city was left in ruins. Nehemiah, upon hearing this news, was burdened and sought permission from the king to return to Jerusalem and oversee the reconstruction. This verse specifically mentions the involvement of the Tekoites and highlights the fact that while the common people from Tekoa were actively engaged in the work, their nobles chose not to participate.

Participation in the Lord’s work: The verse emphasizes that the Tekoites, a group of people from Tekoa, actively participated in the rebuilding of the walls. Their commitment and dedication to the work of the Lord are commendable. This highlights the importance of actively engaging in God’s work and serving Him wholeheartedly.

Leadership and responsibility: While the common people of Tekoa took up their tools and worked diligently, the nobles or leaders of the community did not join in the labor. This points to a lack of leadership responsibility and a failure to lead by example. It is a reminder that those in positions of authority have a responsibility to set a positive example and actively contribute to the work of the Lord.

Spiritual apathy: The fact that the nobles “put not their necks to the service of their Lord” suggests a certain level of spiritual apathy or indifference. They had the means and influence to contribute to the rebuilding efforts, yet they chose not to. This highlights the danger of spiritual complacency and the need to guard against it in our own lives. It serves as a reminder that our faith should be active and transformative, motivating us to participate in God’s work.

Equality in God’s kingdom: Despite the lack of involvement from the nobles, the common people of Tekoa took the initiative to repair the walls. This highlights the principle of equality within God’s kingdom, where every individual has a part to play, regardless of their social status or position. It reminds us that every believer, regardless of their background or status, has a unique role in God’s work and should actively contribute to advancing His kingdom.

Application:

Active participation: As followers of Christ, we are called to actively participate in the work of the Lord. This can take various forms, such as serving in our local church, engaging in outreach and evangelism, supporting ministries, and using our gifts and talents to further God’s kingdom. Let us examine our hearts and ask ourselves if we are actively involved in the work of the Lord or if we have become spiritually apathetic.

Leading by example: If we hold positions of leadership or influence within our church or community, it is essential to lead by example. Our actions should reflect our commitment to God’s work, inspiring and encouraging others to do the same. Let us be mindful of our responsibilities and strive to be servant leaders, setting a positive example for others to follow.

Recognizing the value of every individual: We should not underestimate the value of each person’s contribution in God’s kingdom. Regardless of our social status or position, we all have a part to play. Let us embrace a spirit of unity and cooperation, appreciating and encouraging the efforts of others as we work together to advance God’s purposes.

In conclusion, Nehemiah 3:5 reminds us of the importance of active participation in the work of the Lord, the responsibility of leadership, the danger of spiritual apathy, and the equality of all believers in God’s kingdom. May we be inspired to wholeheartedly engage in God’s work, serving Him faithfully and encouraging others to do the same.
