Nehemiah 3:7
And next vnto them repaired Melatiah the Gibeonite, and Iadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon, and of Mizpah, vnto the throne of the gouernour on this side the Riuer. Nehemiah 3:7 (KJV)
The book of Nehemiah is set during the period when the Israelites returned from exile in Babylon and began to rebuild Jerusalem. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king, was moved by the ruin of the city, obtained royal permission, and oversaw the restoration of its walls and gates.
Melatiah the Gibeonite and Jadon the Meronothite are named in this verse as participants in the reconstruction. Melatiah is identified with Gibeon, a town northwest of Jerusalem, while Jadon is described as a Meronothite, indicating his origin from Meronoth. Their inclusion highlights the involvement of individuals from diverse regions in the work of rebuilding.
Nehemiah chapter 3 records how various sections of the wall and its gates were repaired by different groups. The mention of Melatiah and Jadon repairing a specific portion “next unto them” shows that each person or family was assigned a concrete task, contributing to the overall goal of restoring Jerusalem’s defenses.
The phrase “next unto them” underscores the collaborative nature of the project. These workers labored alongside neighboring groups, demonstrating unity and coordinated effort among the people of Jerusalem. Such cooperation was essential for the successful completion of the massive rebuilding enterprise.
The dedication of Melatiah and Jadon reflects faithfulness to the task entrusted to them. Despite the labor‑intensive and often hazardous nature of wall construction, they persevered and fulfilled their responsibilities diligently. Their example encourages believers today to serve God faithfully and commit to the work He calls them to.
While the passage provides historical detail, it also carries symbolic weight. The physical restoration of Jerusalem’s walls represented the renewal of God’s people and the re‑establishment of their spiritual and national identity. Each individual’s contribution, including that of Melatiah and Jadon, formed part of a larger narrative of renewal and revival.
And next unto them repaired Melatiah the Gibeonite, and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon, and of Mizpah, unto the doors of the house of Eliashib the high priest, and unto the tower of the king’s house.
