Nehemiah 3:10
And next unto them repaired Jedaiah the son of Harumaph, even over against his house. And next unto him repaired Hattush the son of Hashabniah.
Nehemiah 3:10 (KJV)
Context
The book of Nehemiah is set after the Babylonian exile, during the Persian period when the Jews had returned to Jerusalem. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes, received permission to go back and rebuild the city’s walls and gates. Chapter 3 records the many individuals and groups who labored together on this task. Verse 10 mentions two of those workers, Jedaiah the son of Harumaph and Hattush the son of Hashabniah, noting that Jedaiah repaired the section opposite his own house and Hattush worked on the adjoining portion.
Meaning
The passage highlights personal investment in the rebuilding effort. Jedaiah chose to repair the wall directly in front of his home, and Hattush took up the next stretch, showing a practical and communal approach to restoring Jerusalem’s defenses. The detail that Jedaiah worked opposite his own house is significant: he could not easily object to the task, and it was reasonable to expect he would take special care to make it strong for his own safety and that of his household. Hattush is mentioned as repairing the next section, but nothing else is known about him from the text. Their names are recorded, showing that ordinary people’s contributions were valued and remembered.
Biblical connections
The two men worked side by side, each contributing a specific segment while advancing a common goal. Their cooperation illustrates the principle that the body of Christ functions best when members use their gifts in harmony, supporting one another to accomplish God’s purposes. This unity in labor reflects the teaching in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 that believers are one body with many parts, each essential to the whole.
Application
Nehemiah 3:10 reminds each of us that God’s work often begins with the tasks closest to us. Whether serving in a local church, offering compassion to a neighbor, or sharing the gospel, we should take ownership of the responsibilities entrusted to us. Just as Jedaiah and Hattush joined forces, believers should cultivate a spirit of teamwork, valuing the diverse gifts within the church and working together for greater impact. By faithfully tending the “wall” of our own environments, we reflect the same dedication shown by these builders, bringing honor to God and contributing to the overall health of the body of Christ.
Reflection
Although brief, Nehemiah 3:10 provides a vivid picture of commitment, unity, and responsibility in the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls. Applying these principles can strengthen our own faith and service. The verse encourages us to see our daily responsibilities as part of God’s larger plan, and to remember that even small, local efforts are significant in His sight.
