Nehemiah 3:11
Malchijah the son of Harim, and Hashub the son of Pahath–moab, repaired the other piece, and the tower of the furnaces.
Nehemiah 3:11 (KJV)
Context
Nehemiah, once cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes, felt a divine burden to rebuild the ruined walls of Jerusalem. Chapter 3 records the careful work of many individuals and families who joined this great restoration. This verse names two of those workers: Malchijah, son of Harim, and Hashub, son of Pahath-moab. Their fathers were heads of families who returned from captivity with Zerubbabel, as noted in Ezra 2:6 and Ezra 2:32, linking this work to the wider renewal of the Jewish community.
Meaning
The phrase “the other piece” likely refers to a second section of wall, perhaps next to the work of the previously mentioned builder. The “tower of the furnaces” was a defensive tower near ovens used for baking bread or bricks. Such a tower was vital for daily life, supporting trades and providing security. Restoring it was essential for the city to function again. The names themselves carry meaning: Malchijah means “my king is Yahweh,” and Hashub means “considerate” or “regardful.” These names remind readers that God knows each worker personally.
Biblical connections
The rebuilding effort was a response to God’s guidance and a fulfillment of the community’s commitment to restore Jerusalem. The detailed list of workers in Nehemiah 3 shows that ordinary people, not just leaders, were essential. Each person took responsibility for a specific section, demonstrating unity and cooperation. This collective work reflects the body of Christ, where every believer has a part, as taught in 1 Corinthians 12.
Application
Today, the church functions best when believers collaborate, each using their unique gifts for God’s kingdom. The focus on the tower reminds us that God cares about both spiritual and practical needs. We should invite His guidance to renew every area of life, fostering restoration and revival. The specific mention of Malchijah and Hashub encourages each believer to recognize their individual contribution—no matter how small—to God’s larger work.
Reflection
God values faithful service in every task, whether prominent or hidden. The repair of a tower and a wall section may seem ordinary, but it was part of God’s plan. Likewise, our daily obedience, done with diligence, builds His kingdom. Let us serve with the same commitment, knowing that our labor in the Lord is never wasted.
