Nehemiah 7:19

Posted on 18 May at 15:21

“The children of Bigvai, two thousand threescore and seven.”

Context:The book of Nehemiah is a historical account of the Israelites’ return from exile in Babylon and the subsequent rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes, received permission to return to Jerusalem and oversee the restoration of the city. Nehemiah 7 focuses on the registration of the returned exiles and the leaders of the community.

In Nehemiah 7:19, we encounter the mention of a group called the “children of Bigvai.” This verse provides a specific count of this particular group, stating that they numbered two thousand threescore and seven. Threescore refers to sixty, so the verse means that the children of Bigvai numbered 2,067 individuals.

The significance of mentioning the “children of Bigvai” is not explicitly explained in this verse alone. However, in the broader context of Nehemiah 7, it becomes clear that Nehemiah is meticulously recording the names and numbers of the individuals who returned from exile. This detailed registration was essential for several reasons, including:

Identification and inheritance:The registration ensured that each family and clan could be identified and receive their rightful inheritance of land and possessions as prescribed by God’s law.

Accountability and organization:By recording the names and numbers, Nehemiah established a system of accountability and organization within the community. This helped facilitate effective governance and resource allocation.

Historical documentation:Nehemiah’s meticulous registration served as a historical record of the restoration of Jerusalem. It preserved the memory of God’s faithfulness in bringing His people back to their homeland.

  • Attention to detail:Nehemiah’s dedication to accurately recording the names and numbers demonstrates the importance of paying attention to the details of our lives and responsibilities. In our own endeavors, we should strive for thoroughness and precision.
  • Accountability and order:Nehemiah’s systematic registration highlights the significance of accountability and order in any community or organization. By establishing structures and systems, we can promote unity, fairness, and effective functioning.
  • Historical remembrance:Nehemiah’s efforts to document the return from exile serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving and valuing our own history. By remembering and learning from the past, we can appreciate God’s faithfulness and draw inspiration for the future.
  • God’s providence and restoration:The entire book of Nehemiah is a testament to God’s providential care and His desire to restore His people. Nehemiah’s work, including the detailed registration, was part of God’s plan to bring healing and renewal. We can trust that God is also at work in our lives, orchestrating restoration and rebuilding according to His purposes.
