Nehemiah 7:58

The children of Jaala, the children of Darkon, the children of Giddel,

Nehemiah 7:58 (KJV)

Nehemiah 7 records the families who returned from Babylon to Jerusalem under Zerubbabel. This verse names three family groups: Jaala, Darkon, and Giddel. The same list appears in Ezra 2:56 with slight spelling differences, confirming these are the same people. These families belonged to the descendants of Solomon’s servants, likely temple workers or officials in his administration.

The verse simply records their presence among the restored community. Their inclusion shows that God kept careful account of every family, even those with humble roles. The names themselves have uncertain meanings, but their preservation in Scripture matters more than their definition.

Ezra 2:56 lists the same families, confirming the accuracy of the record. This register connects to the broader theme of restoration in Ezra-Nehemiah, where God fulfills His promise to bring His people back to the land. The listing of these obscure families demonstrates that no one is forgotten by God.

God remembers and honors all His people, regardless of social status. These families served in quiet roles, yet their names are written in Scripture. Believers can take comfort that their own service, even when unnoticed by others, is recorded by God and valued in His redemptive plan.

Every believer has a place in God’s story, even when that place seems small. The presence of these names encourages readers to see their own lives as part of God’s ongoing work. Faithfulness in ordinary tasks matters to God, who preserves His people through exile and restoration.
