Nehemiah 7:6

Posted on 18 May at 15:21

“These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city”

Context:The book of Nehemiah is set during the time of the Israelites’ return from the Babylonian captivity. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes, was burdened by the news of Jerusalem’s walls being in ruins. He received permission from the king to go and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. In Nehemiah 7, we see Nehemiah’s efforts to organise the people and ensure the safety of the city.

Nehemiah 7:6 provides a summary of the people who returned to Jerusalem from the Babylonian captivity. It acknowledges the history of the Israelites being carried away as captives by Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and now, after the decree of King Cyrus of Persia allowing them to return, they have come back to their respective cities in Jerusalem and Judah.

Deliverance from Captivity:The verse reminds us of the Israelites’ deliverance from the Babylonian captivity. It highlights the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises and bringing His people back to their land. This serves as a testament to God’s sovereignty and His ability to rescue His people from challenging situations.

God’s Timing:The return from captivity was not a haphazard event. It occurred according to God’s divine plan. The Babylonian captivity served as a consequence for the Israelites’ disobedience, but God’s mercy and faithfulness prompted Him to allow their return at the appointed time. It teaches us to trust in God’s timing and have faith that He will fulfil His promises in His perfect time.

Restoration and Rebuilding:Nehemiah’s mission was to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and restore its dignity and security. The verse affirms the people’s commitment to returning to their respective cities and rebuilding their lives. It symbolises the importance of restoration and rebuilding in our spiritual lives as well. We can learn from this passage that God desires to restore what is broken and rebuild what has been destroyed in our lives.

Unity and Community:The fact that each person returned to his own city emphasises the importance of community and the unity of God’s people. Despite being scattered during their captivity, they were now reunited in their homeland. This highlights the significance of coming together as believers, supporting one another, and working together to accomplish God’s purposes.

  • As we reflect on Nehemiah 7:6, we can apply its lessons to our own lives. We should remember God’s faithfulness in delivering us from our own captivity, whether it be from sin, addictions, or difficult circumstances. We can trust in God’s timing, knowing that He will fulfil His promises in our lives.

This verse also encourages us to actively participate in the restoration and rebuilding of our spiritual lives, relationships, and communities. Just as the Israelites took ownership of their cities, we should take responsibility for our own lives and contribute to the well-being and growth of those around us.

Finally, Nehemiah 7:6 calls us to prioritise unity and community. We should seek to build strong bonds with other believers, support one another, and work together in advancing God’s kingdom. Together, we can accomplish far more than we could on our own.

May this Bible study on Nehemiah 7:6 inspire you to trust in God’s faithfulness, actively participate in restoration and rebuilding, and cultivate unity and community among fellow believers.
