Nehemiah 7:5

Listen to this article

“And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein,”

Context:The book of Nehemiah is a historical account that follows the Israelites’ return from exile in Babylon to Jerusalem. Nehemiah was a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia, but he had a deep burden to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and restore the city’s spiritual and physical well-being. Nehemiah sought permission from the king and received support to undertake this task.

Nehemiah’s leadership and determination led to the successful completion of the wall in just 52 days (Nehemiah 6:15). After the completion of the wall, Nehemiah focused on organizing and repopulating Jerusalem, which brings us to Nehemiah 7.

Divine Inspiration:The verse begins with Nehemiah acknowledging that it was God who put the desire in his heart to gather the nobles, rulers, and people. This verse highlights the role of divine inspiration and guidance in the life of Nehemiah. God worked in his heart, stirring up the necessary passion and vision to carry out the task. It reminds us that when we have a burden or desire to accomplish something, we should seek God’s guidance and trust in His leading.

Gathering the People:Nehemiah’s purpose in gathering the nobles, rulers, and people was to take a census or to reckon them by genealogy. This was important to establish the population and determine the families who had returned to Jerusalem from the Babylonian exile. The genealogical records were vital for various purposes, including confirming the legitimacy of the people’s heritage and the restoration of tribal and family rights.

The Found Register:Nehemiah mentions that he found a register or a written account of the genealogy of those who had come up at the first. This suggests that the genealogical records had been preserved from the time of the initial return of the exiles under the leadership of Zerubbabel, around 538 BC (see Ezra 2). This discovery was crucial because it provided a historical reference for the returned exiles and helped establish their connection to the nation of Israel.

Importance of Genealogy:The emphasis on genealogy in this verse reflects the significance of lineage and heritage in the Jewish culture. Genealogical records were essential for identifying one’s tribal affiliation, determining eligibility for certain roles and responsibilities, and ensuring the integrity of the priestly and Levitical lines. The preservation of genealogical records demonstrated God’s faithfulness to His promises and the continuity of the Israelite community.

  • Recognition of God’s Guidance:Nehemiah’s recognition of God’s role in inspiring and guiding him serves as a reminder for us to acknowledge God’s direction and leading in our own lives. We should seek His wisdom and guidance as we pursue our goals and desires.
  • Appreciation for Heritage:While we may not place the same emphasis on genealogy as the Israelites did, we can still appreciate and honour our heritage. Understanding our family history and the faith of our ancestors can provide a sense of connection, identity, and gratitude for the work of God in our lives.
  • Faithful Record-Keeping:The preservation of historical records was important to the Israelites. As believers, we should also strive to preserve and pass down the testimonies of God’s faithfulness in our lives and in the lives of our communities, so

that future generations can be encouraged and inspired.

Conclusion:

Nehemiah 7:5 highlights the divine inspiration behind Nehemiah’s leadership, the importance of genealogical records, and the preservation of Israelite heritage. It reminds us to seek God’s guidance, appreciate our own heritage, and faithfully record and pass down the stories of God’s work in our lives.
