Nehemiah 6:19
“Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.”
Verse: “Also, they reported his good deeds before me and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to frighten me.” (Nehemiah 6:19, KJV)
Context: The book of Nehemiah is set during the time when the Israelites were returning from exile in Babylon. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the king of Persia, was burdened by the news of Jerusalem’s destruction and the broken state of its walls. He obtained permission from the king to return to Jerusalem and lead the rebuilding efforts.
Opposition from Sanballat and Tobiah: Nehemiah faced opposition from Sanballat, the governor of Samaria, and Tobiah, an Ammonite official. They were opposed to the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem and sought to intimidate and discourage Nehemiah.
Reports of Nehemiah’s Good Deeds: Despite the opposition, Nehemiah’s character and dedication to the task at hand were evident. The people who were loyal to Nehemiah reported his good deeds to his adversaries, including Sanballat and Tobiah. This reflects the faithfulness of those who supported Nehemiah’s mission.
Tobiah’s Attempt to Frighten Nehemiah: In an effort to discourage Nehemiah, Tobiah sent letters to frighten him. These letters likely contained threats or false accusations intended to undermine Nehemiah’s credibility and confidence. It was a tactic aimed at distracting him from completing the work on the walls.
- Opposition is Inevitable: Nehemiah faced significant opposition in his endeavor to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. As believers, we can expect opposition when we pursue God’s purposes. We should not be surprised when challenges arise, but rather be prepared to face them with faith and determination.
- Faithfulness is Recognized: Nehemiah’s good deeds were reported to his adversaries. This reminds us that our faithfulness and commitment to God’s work do not go unnoticed. Even in the face of opposition, our character and actions can be a testimony to others and may lead them to recognize and acknowledge God’s work in our lives.
- Fearing God over Human Threats: Although Tobiah sought to frighten Nehemiah, the latter remained focused and resolute in his commitment to God. Nehemiah’s fear of God superseded any fear of human intimidation. This teaches us the importance of placing our trust in God and relying on His strength rather than succumbing to fear or being deterred by the threats of others.
Application: Nehemiah’s example encourages us to persevere in the face of opposition, remain faithful to God’s call, and trust in His protection. When challenges arise, we should seek God’s guidance and rely on His strength to overcome them. Let us remember that God is always with us, and His purposes will prevail, regardless of the opposition we may face.
