Nehemiah 6:16

Listen to this article

“And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.”

Historical Background: The book of Nehemiah is set during the time of the Israelites’ return from exile in Babylon. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the king of Persia, was granted permission to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls of the city. Despite facing opposition and various challenges, Nehemiah demonstrated strong leadership and unwavering faith in God.

Opposition and Resistance: Throughout the process of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, Nehemiah and the people encountered significant opposition from their enemies and the surrounding nations. Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem were among those who opposed the restoration efforts. They employed various tactics, including mockery, threats, and conspiracy, in an attempt to hinder the work.

The Completion of the Work: Verse 6:15 describes how the walls were completed in just fifty-two days. This was an incredible accomplishment considering the challenges they faced. Nehemiah’s leadership and the determination of the people played a crucial role in this achievement. The completion of the walls was a testament to their commitment, faith, and trust in God.

The Impact on Enemies and Heathen Nations: Verse 6:16 focuses on the reaction of the enemies and heathen nations who observed the completion of the wall. They were “much cast down in their own eyes” or greatly discouraged and humiliated. The reason behind their discouragement was the realization that this work was not accomplished by human strength or power but was rather a result of God’s intervention.

God’s Hand at Work: The enemies and heathen nations acknowledged that the restoration of the walls was a divine work. They perceived that God’s hand was upon Nehemiah and the Israelites. The completion of the walls was not just a physical accomplishment; it was a demonstration of God’s faithfulness, provision, and protection.

Lessons and Applications:

  • God’s Work Prevails: The completion of the walls of Jerusalem against all odds serves as a reminder that when God is in a work, nothing can stand against it. His purposes will ultimately be fulfilled, and opposition will be overcome.
  • Faith in the Face of Opposition: Nehemiah’s unwavering faith and trust in God despite the opposition challenge us to remain steadfast in our faith when facing obstacles. God is with us, and He will enable us to overcome.
  • God Receives the Glory: The enemies and heathen nations acknowledged that the work was wrought of God. As believers, when we accomplish great things, we should give credit and glory to God, recognizing that it is His power at work in us.
