Nehemiah 9:16

Posted on 18 May at 15:21
Listen to this article

“But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments.”

This verse is part of a prayer of confession and repentance offered by the Levites on behalf of the Israelites. In this prayer, the Levites are recounting the history of the Israelites, acknowledging both God’s faithfulness and the people’s disobedience.

To better understand Nehemiah 9:16, let’s consider its context by looking at the preceding verses. Nehemiah 9:9-15 highlights God’s mighty acts of deliverance during the time of the Exodus. It mentions how God saw the affliction of the Israelites in Egypt, heard their cries, and performed signs and wonders in their midst, such as the plagues and the parting of the Red Sea.

In Nehemiah 9:16, the focus shifts to the response of the Israelites to God’s faithfulness. The verse begins by acknowledging that “they and our fathers dealt proudly.” This refers to the people’s arrogance and rebellion against God’s authority and guidance. Instead of humbling themselves before God and obeying His commandments, they chose to go their own way and follow their own desires.

The phrase “hardened their necks” is a vivid metaphor, illustrating the stubbornness and resistance of the Israelites. It reflects their unwillingness to submit to God’s authority and the stiffness of their rebellion against Him.

The latter part of the verse states, “and hearkened not to thy commandments.” This emphasizes the Israelites’ failure to listen and obey God’s commandments, which were given to guide and bless them. Despite God’s continual provision, protection, and instruction, the Israelites persistently turned away from His ways and pursued their own sinful desires.

The purpose of highlighting these past failures and shortcomings is to express repentance and seek God’s forgiveness. The Israelites recognized their disobedience and acknowledged their need for God’s mercy and restoration. This prayer of confession is an important step in their journey of renewal and recommitment to follow God wholeheartedly.

As we reflect on Nehemiah 9:16 today, it serves as a reminder for us to examine our own lives. It prompts us to consider whether we are humbly submitting to God’s commandments or allowing pride and rebellion to hinder our relationship with Him. It encourages us to cultivate a heart that is willing to listen, obey, and align with God’s will, knowing that His commandments are given for our good and for the flourishing of our lives.

Ultimately, Nehemiah 9:16 urges us to learn from the mistakes of the Israelites and strive to live in obedience to God’s Word, recognizing His faithfulness and seeking His forgiveness when we fall short.
