Nehemiah 9:23

Listen to this article

“Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.”

Historical Context: The book of Nehemiah is set during the time of Israel’s restoration after the Babylonian exile. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes, had returned to Jerusalem to lead the rebuilding of the city walls. The people of Israel gathered to hear the reading of the Law and to renew their commitment to God’s covenant.

Nehemiah 9 is a chapter of confession, repentance, and worship. The people of Israel had gathered on the twenty-fourth day of the seventh month to fast, pray, and repent. They recognised their sins and the faithfulness of God throughout their history. They confessed their disobedience, acknowledged God’s mercy, and recounted His deliverance from Egypt and His provision in the wilderness.

Understanding Nehemiah 9:23:

In Nehemiah 9:23, the people acknowledge God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. The verse highlights two aspects:

a) Multiplying their children: This refers to God’s blessing of increase upon the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God had promised Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky (Genesis 15:5). The Israelites recognised God’s faithfulness in fulfilling this promise, even during their time in Egypt and the wilderness.

b) Bringing them into the promised land: The verse also acknowledges that God had fulfilled His promise to bring the Israelites into the land He had sworn to give to their fathers (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob). This refers to the fulfilment of God’s covenant with the Israelites, as He had promised to bring them into the land of Canaan.

  • God’s faithfulness: The verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. Despite the Israelites’ failures and disobedience, God remained true to His covenant. It serves as a reminder that God is faithful to His promises, both in the past and in our lives today.
  • The importance of remembering: Nehemiah 9:23 encourages us to reflect on and remember God’s faithfulness throughout history. By recounting God’s past acts of mercy and provision, we are reminded of His character and are encouraged to trust Him in our present circumstances.
  • God’s blessings: The verse emphasises that God blesses His people and fulfils His promises. Just as God multiplied the descendants of Abraham and brought the Israelites into the promised land, we can trust that God will fulfil His promises to us as well.
  • Gratitude and worship: Nehemiah 9:23 also prompts us to respond with gratitude and worship. As we recognise God’s faithfulness and provision, it should lead us to praise and thank Him for His goodness and mercy.
