Moreouer, thou gauest them kingdomes and nations, and didst diuide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan. Nehemiah 9:22 (KJV)

The book of Nehemiah is a historical account of the restoration of Jerusalem’s walls and the spiritual revival among the Jewish people following their return from exile in Babylon. Nehemiah served as a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia, and he received permission to return to Jerusalem and rebuild its walls.

God’s Generosity: Nehemiah acknowledges that God graciously gave the Israelites kingdoms and nations. This verse highlights God’s providence in granting the Israelites possession of specific territories, such as the land of Sihon, the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og, the king of Bashan.

God’s Division and Distribution: the verse mentions that God divided these kingdoms and nations into corners. This emphasizes God’s role in the distribution of lands among the Israelites. It signifies how God allotted territories to various tribes and families, enabling them to possess the Promised Land.

God’s Faithfulness: Throughout Nehemiah 9, the Israelites recount God’s faithfulness and their own unfaithfulness. Despite their disobedience, God remained faithful to His promises and provided for them. This verse underscores God’s faithfulness by recalling the specific instances when He gave the Israelites possession of these lands.

Acknowledging God’s Provision: Nehemiah’s prayer teaches us to acknowledge God’s provision and sovereignty in our lives. Just as God provided for the Israelites, He also blesses us with various resources and opportunities. Recognizing His hand in our lives leads to gratitude and trust in His continued provision.

Remembering God’s Faithfulness: Reflecting on God’s faithfulness in the past strengthens our faith in the present. Despite the Israelites’ unfaithfulness, God remained true to His promises. Similarly, we can find comfort in knowing that God is faithful to His Word and His covenant with us.

Gratitude and Stewardship: The Israelites’ possession of these lands was not solely for their benefit. It was an opportunity to be good stewards of what God had given them. Likewise, God blesses us with resources and abilities to be used for His glory and the benefit of others. We should be grateful for His provisions and use them wisely.

Unity and Cooperation: The Israelites received different portions of land, indicating diversity among them. However, they had to work together to possess and develop their territories. This highlights the importance of unity and cooperation among God’s people to accomplish His purposes.

In conclusion, Nehemiah 9:22 reminds us of God’s generosity, His division and distribution of lands, and His faithfulness. It encourages us to acknowledge His provision, remember His faithfulness, practice gratitude and stewardship, and promote unity and cooperation among God’s people.
