Nehemiah 9:8

Posted on 18 May at 15:21

“And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous”

Context:Nehemiah 9 is a chapter that recounts the Israelites’ history and God’s faithfulness to them. The chapter begins with the people of Israel fasting, wearing sackcloth, and confessing their sins before God. They acknowledge God’s covenant and His mighty acts throughout their history. In verse 8, the focus is on God’s faithfulness to the patriarch Abraham.

Founding a Faithful Heart:The verse starts by acknowledging that God found Abraham’s heart faithful before Him. This highlights Abraham’s devotion and obedience to God. Abraham’s faith was evident in his response to God’s call, leaving his homeland and journeying to the land of Canaan (Genesis 12:1-4). God recognised Abraham’s faith and chose to enter into a covenant with him.

Making a Covenant:God made a covenant with Abraham, promising to give him and his descendants the land of Canaan. This covenant is often referred to as the Abrahamic Covenant (Genesis 15:18-21). It was a significant covenant that would have far-reaching implications for future generations. God’s choice to establish this covenant demonstrates His sovereignty and His intention to fulfill His promises.

Promised Land and Its Inhabitants:In Nehemiah 9:8, the verse mentions several nations occupying the land of Canaan: the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites, and Girgashites. These were the various peoples that inhabited the Promised Land before the Israelites. God’s promise to Abraham included the inheritance of this land by his descendants, thus necessitating the removal of these nations.

God’s Faithfulness and Righteousness:The verse concludes by acknowledging God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. It highlights that God performed His words and remained true to His covenant. The affirmation of God’s righteousness signifies His faithfulness, justice, and moral perfection.

Overall, Nehemiah 9:8 emphasises God’s faithfulness to His covenant with Abraham and His righteous nature. It serves as a reminder to the Israelites of God’s enduring faithfulness throughout their history. This verse also encourages believers to trust in God’s promises, knowing that He is steadfast in fulfilling His Word.
