Of Asher: Pagiel the sonne of Ocran. Numbers 1:13 (KJV)

The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and provides an account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In chapter 1, God commands Moses to take a census of the Israelite men who are twenty years old and above, able to go to war. This census would help organize the tribes and prepare for their journey.

Tribe of Asher: Asher was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, named after Jacob’s eighth son, Asher. The tribe of Asher received their allotment of land on the western coast of Canaan, northwest of the tribe of Manasseh. Asher’s territory was known for its fertile soil and was bordered by the Mediterranean Sea. The tribe of Asher played a significant role in the history of Israel.

Pagiel, the son of Ocran: In Numbers 1:13, Pagiel is mentioned as the representative of the tribe of Asher in the census. Pagiel was the son of Ocran. While the Bible does not provide much information about Pagiel specifically, his name appears in the list of those appointed to represent their respective tribes during the census. The name “Pagiel” means “God has met” or “God’s intervention.”

Lessons from Numbers 1:13:

Inclusion and representation: God commanded Moses to take a census to ensure that each tribe was represented. This highlights the importance of recognizing and valuing the individual members of the community. Every person has a role to play, and their inclusion is essential for the functioning and unity of the community.

God’s sovereignty: The mention of Pagiel as the representative of Asher reminds us that God knows each person individually, even if their personal details are not extensively mentioned in Scripture. God values every individual and has a purpose for each person’s life, whether they are explicitly mentioned or not.

Community and unity: The census in Numbers aimed to organize the Israelites as a cohesive community. It reminds believers of the importance of unity and cooperation within the body of Christ. Each tribe had its unique identity, yet they were part of a larger whole, working together for a common purpose.

The significance of names: Although we have little information about Pagiel himself, his name carries meaning that points to divine initiative. This serves as a reminder that God assigns roles and responsibilities within the community, and we can trust in His guidance and provision.

In conclusion, Numbers 1:13 introduces Pagiel as the representative of the tribe of Asher during the census. The verse teaches the importance of inclusion, representation, community, and God’s sovereignty over the roles and responsibilities within the people of God.
