Numbers 10:29

And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses’ father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the Lord said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the Lord hath spoken good concerning Israel.

Numbers 10:29 (KJV)

The book of Numbers tells of Israel’s wilderness journey toward the Promised Land. Here Moses speaks to Hobab as the camp prepares to move on.

Hobab is the son of Raguel, also called Jethro, the priest of Midian and father of Zipporah, Moses’ wife. So Hobab is Moses’ brother-in-law. The Hebrew word translated “father in law” can mean a male relative by marriage. Moses invites Hobab to join Israel, promising, “we will do thee good.” The true basis of this promise is that “the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel.” God’s faithfulness, not human merit, secures the blessing. This invitation is grounded in God’s promise to give Israel the land, not in what Hobab could offer.

Moses’ words echo the covenant promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, assuring the people of a land flowing with milk and honey. Although Hobab first declines (Numbers 10:30), Judges 1:16 and 4:11 show his descendants later among Israel, suggesting he eventually shared in the journey. This outcome shows that God’s goodness extends beyond the immediate moment.

Believers can invite others to share in God’s goodness, not because of what they offer, but because God has spoken good concerning His people. The invitation reflects generous trust in divine promise. We too can welcome others into the community of faith, knowing that God’s faithfulness is the foundation.

God’s goodness to Israel becomes a model for extending kindness to others. Moses’ words encourage confidence that God keeps His word and welcomes all who come. Consider how you might invite someone to experience God’s goodness this week.
