Numbers 10:32
And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what goodness the Lord shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.
Numbers 10:32 (KJV)
Context
Israel has camped at Sinai and now prepares to move toward Canaan. In Numbers 10, the LORD gives Moses two silver trumpets to call the people and to signal when the camps should set out. The cloud over the tabernacle guides each stage of the journey. As the march begins, Moses speaks to Hobab, the son of his father-in-law Jethro. Hobab is a Midianite who knows the wilderness well. Moses asks him to travel with Israel and to be their guide through the unfamiliar land.
Meaning
Moses promises that whatever good the LORD does for Israel, they will do the same for Hobab. The words “it shall be” appear twice, showing strong certainty. Moses does not know every blessing ahead, but he trusts that God will provide. He offers Hobab a share in that future goodness. The promise is conditional: Hobab must choose to go. His participation in Israel’s blessings depends on his response to the invitation.
Biblical connections
This verse reflects a pattern seen elsewhere in Scripture. God blesses Abraham so that he will be a blessing to others (Genesis 12:2-3). Here, Israel is called to extend God’s goodness to a willing companion. The principle is simple: those who receive from God should share with others. Moses does not keep the promise of blessing for Israel alone. He opens it to Hobab, showing that God’s favor can reach beyond the covenant community when people respond in faith.
Application
We can learn from Moses’ example. He recognized Hobab’s skills and did not hesitate to ask for help. In our families, churches, and workplaces, we should value the abilities of others and invite them to join us in good work. We should also be ready to share the blessings we receive. When God answers a prayer or provides for a need, we can look for ways to pass that kindness along. Gratitude becomes visible when we treat others the way God has treated us.
Reflection
Hobab faced a choice. He could stay in familiar territory or go with God’s people and trust the promise. We face similar choices when we are invited to follow God’s leading. The journey may be uncertain, but the promise is sure. God’s goodness toward His people is not meant to be hoarded. It flows through them to others. As we walk with God, we can confidently invite others to share in His goodness, knowing that He will do what He has said.
