Numbers 10:35

And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, Lord, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee.

Numbers 10:35 (KJV)

Numbers 10:35 belongs to the account of Israel’s wilderness journey. The ark of the covenant, which represented God’s presence, was carried forward as the people moved from place to place. The cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out (Numbers 10:34), showing that God directed their travels.

The ark was a sacred chest of acacia wood overlaid with gold. It held the tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron’s rod, and a jar of manna (Hebrews 9:4). It was the most holy object in the tabernacle and symbolized God dwelling among His people. When the ark set forward, Moses called out, “Rise up, LORD.” This was a prayer of faith, spoken as the Kohathites carried the ark (Numbers 10:21). It was not a single request but a recurring prayer whenever the ark moved, encouraging the Israelites to depend on God at every stage.

Moses prayed for the scattering of God’s enemies and the fleeing of those who hated Him. This expressed confidence that victory and protection came from the Lord alone. The following verse records Moses’ prayer for the ark’s rest (Numbers 10:36), forming a pattern of dependence on God for both movement and rest. This shows that every part of the journey, whether starting or stopping, was committed to God.

Believers today can apply this verse by acknowledging God’s presence in their own journeys. Just as the ark led Israel, God’s presence should lead the believer. Begin each step with prayer, relying on Him for guidance and protection. In times of trouble, entrust battles to Him, knowing He is the ultimate source of victory. His power is sufficient to scatter spiritual enemies and cause them to flee.

This verse highlights God’s sovereignty and power over His enemies. It affirms that those who oppose God and His people will be scattered and flee before Him. It reminds us that our God is mighty and will ultimately triumph over all opposition. Trust in His active intervention rather than human strength, for He is the one who rises, who scatters, and who causes enemies to flee.
