Numbers 13:16
These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.
Numbers 13:16 (KJV)
Context
Numbers 13 records a turning point for Israel. After deliverance from Egypt, the people camped near Canaan, the land God promised to give them. At God’s command, Moses chose twelve leaders, one from each tribe, to explore the land and report on its people, cities, and resources. This verse lists those names and highlights one special act: Moses renamed Oshea, the son of Nun, as Jehoshua.
Meaning
The name Oshea means “salvation” or “deliverance.” By changing it to Jehoshua, which means “Yahweh is salvation” or “the Lord saves,” Moses declared that true deliverance comes from God alone. This new name was not just a label; it revealed Joshua’s calling and the source of his strength. Moses, as God’s appointed leader, had the authority to give this name, showing that God was already preparing Joshua for future service.
Biblical connections
Joshua later proved faithful when most spies brought an unbelieving report (Numbers 14:6-9). His name pointed beyond his own leadership to a greater deliverer. Jehoshua is the Hebrew form of the name Jesus, meaning “the Lord saves.” Just as Joshua led Israel into the earthly Promised Land, Jesus leads God’s people into spiritual salvation and eternal rest. The name change foreshadows this greater fulfillment.
Application
Names in Scripture often reveal character and purpose. Joshua’s new name reminded him daily that his success depended on God’s saving power. Believers today carry the name of Christ and share in His salvation. This truth calls for humble dependence on God rather than self-confidence. When facing challenges, remember that the Lord who saved is also the Lord who leads.
Reflection
God sees the end from the beginning. Long before Joshua led Israel, God was shaping his identity and mission. The same God who renamed Joshua knows each believer’s purpose. Trust His plan, even when the path seems uncertain. He who began a good work will complete it.
