Numbers 14:14
And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they haue heard that thou Lord art among this people, that thou Lord art seene face to face, and that thy cloud standeth ouer them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night. Numbers 14:14 (KJV)
Historical Context: The book of Numbers recounts the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their liberation from Egypt. In Numbers 13 Moses sent twelve spies to explore the Promised Land; Numbers 14 records the Israelites’ reaction to the spies’ report at the edge of the land and their desire to return to Egypt.
Moses’ Intercession: In verse 13 Moses intercedes for the Israelites after they express their desire to choose a new leader and return to Egypt. He reminds God of His reputation and His relationship with the Israelites, appealing to God’s covenant faithfulness and pleading for mercy and forgiveness.
God’s Presence: In Numbers 14:14 the LORD responds concerning the people’s rebellion and affirms that the inhabitants of the land have heard about God’s presence among the Israelites. The phrase “that thou Lord art among this people” underscores the unique relationship the Israelites had with God, who was seen through the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night.
Face to Face: Moses recalls that God has spoken to him “face to face,” as described in Exodus 33:11. While the Israelites had not seen God’s literal face (Exodus 33:20), they encountered Him in a more direct and intimate way than any other nation.
The Promised Land’s Reputation: The passage suggests that the people of the land may have been aware of God’s power and the miracles He performed on behalf of the Israelites. Reflecting the reputation of the Israelites and their experiences with God.
Lessons for Today: God’s Presence – just as God was present with the Israelites in the wilderness, He promises to be with His people today (Matthew 28:20), giving comfort and strength. Intimacy with God – believers today can also experience an intimate relationship with Him through faith in Jesus Christ and can approach God boldly. God’s Faithfulness – God remains faithful to His people even when they fail or doubt, forgiving and guiding them as He did with the Israelites. Sharing God’s Work – the reputation of the Israelites and their experiences with God spread to the people of the Promised Land; likewise our lives and testimonies should reflect God’s work, influencing others to know Him.
