Numbers 14:15
Now if thou shalt kill all this people, as one man, then the nations which haue heard the fame of thee, will speake, saying, Numbers 14:15 (KJV)
Numbers 14 records the account of the Israelites’ rebellion against God after receiving a negative report from the spies who explored the Promised Land. The people were filled with fear and doubted God’s ability to give them victory over the inhabitants of Canaan. In this verse Moses intercedes on behalf of the people, praying for God’s mercy and making a plea for His reputation among the nations.
Intercessory Prayer: Moses, as a faithful leader and mediator, stands before God to intercede for the rebellious Israelites. He pleads with God not to destroy the entire nation but to show mercy. Moses understood that if God annihilated the people, it would give a negative testimony to the surrounding nations who had heard about God’s mighty deeds and could influence the surrounding nations’ view of God’s actions.
Concern for God’s Reputation: Moses was deeply concerned, and mindful, that the nations surrounding Israel were observing the outcome. He knew that God’s fame had spread throughout the region due to the miraculous signs and wonders performed during the Exodus from Egypt. If God destroyed the Israelites in the wilderness, the nations would question His ability to fulfil His promises, doubt His power, and shape those nations’ understanding of God’s power and promises.
Importance of God’s Name: Moses appealed to God’s character and reputation, acknowledging that the nations were watching and would form their opinions based on God’s response to the Israelites. The reputation of God’s name was at stake; the surrounding nations would question the credibility and power of the God who led His people out of Egypt if He failed to bring them into the Promised Land.
