Numbers 15:1

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

Numbers 15:1 (KJV)

The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible. It continues the historical account of the Israelites after their exodus from Egypt. The book focuses on their wilderness journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this chapter, God gives Moses instructions about offerings and sacrifices that the Israelites were to present to Him.

The verse begins with the statement, “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying.” This phrase is a recurring formula in the first five books of the Bible. It introduces new divine laws and instructions. The word “saying” shows that what follows is the content of God’s message. This verse establishes that the laws that follow are not of human origin. They are a direct revelation from God to His chosen leader, Moses, for the benefit of the Israelite community.

God’s speaking to Moses highlights His authority, sovereignty, and continuous involvement in the lives of His people. Throughout the Bible, God speaks to His chosen leaders and people, guiding them and revealing His will. This pattern of divine communication demonstrates a personal and intimate relationship between God and His servant. It also shows that God takes the initiative in revealing His will to humanity.

God’s spoken word to Moses indicates the significance of communication in our relationship with Him. Just as God spoke to Moses, He desires to communicate with us today. We can hear God’s voice through reading and studying His Word, prayer, the counsel of fellow believers, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is crucial for us to seek God’s voice and be attentive to what He is saying.

God’s communication to Moses was not arbitrary or insignificant. In this verse, God gave specific instructions to Moses regarding offerings and sacrifices. These instructions were designed to govern the Israelites’ worship and to remind them of their dependence on God. They were also meant to teach them obedience and holiness. Likewise, as believers today, we can find guidance and direction from God’s Word as we seek to live according to His will.

  • Seek communication with God: Just as God spoke to Moses, we should seek to hear from God in our lives. Spend time reading and studying His Word, praying, and cultivating a personal relationship with Him.

  • Obey God’s instructions: The Israelites were given specific instructions by God, and they were expected to obey them. In the same way, as believers, we are called to obey God’s commands and follow His guidance in our lives.

  • Apply the timeless principles: While the cultural and historical context of the Bible may differ from our present circumstances, the timeless principles found within its pages still apply. Seek to understand and apply the principles of love, justice, mercy, and faithfulness in your daily life.

While Numbers 15:1 is a specific instruction to Moses for the Israelites, it also highlights the timeless nature of God’s Word. Although we no longer offer animal sacrifices as a part of our worship, the principles and truths found in God’s Word are still applicable today. The Bible serves as a guide for our lives, providing wisdom, moral teachings, and spiritual insights. It is a source of encouragement, correction, and instruction for believers in every generation.
