Numbers 16:26

Listen to this article

And hee spake vnto the Congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sinnes. Numbers 16:26 (KJV)

Context: Numbers 16 records the rebellion of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram against Moses and Aaron’s leadership. Together with 250 prominent leaders they challenged the divinely appointed priesthood, seeking to usurp God‑chosen authority. In response Moses called for a test to reveal who the Lord had selected as priests. The ground opened and swallowed Korah, Dathan, Abiram, their households, and their possessions, providing a dramatic, supernatural judgment that the whole congregation witnessed.

Warning against association: In Numbers 16:26 Moses addresses the people just before the divine judgment, urging them to separate themselves from the tents of these wicked men. He understands the seriousness of God’s judgment and warns the congregation not to align themselves with those who rebelled against God‑appointed leaders. This serves as a reminder of the importance of avoiding close association with persistent disobedience and rebellion against God.

Consequences of association: Moses explicitly tells the people not to touch anything belonging to the rebels, emphasizing that doing so could cause them to share in the rebels’ sins and be consumed along with them. The warning highlights the principle that participation in the possessions or activities of the ungodly can bring severe spiritual consequences, symbolizing complicity in the rebellion against God’s chosen leaders.

Spiritual application: The account of Korah’s rebellion and Moses’ warning offers several lessons for believers today.

Submission to God‑given authority: The rebellion illustrates the danger of challenging or undermining the authority that God establishes. Believers are called to submit to God‑appointed leaders in the church and other spheres of life.

Separation from ungodly influences: Moses’ exhortation to depart from the tents of the wicked underscores the need to distance ourselves from those who persist in rebellion against God. We should avoid close association with individuals who promote sinful behavior or undermine our faith.

Accountability for our associations: The warning about touching the rebels’ belongings reminds us to be mindful of the company we keep and the influences we allow into our lives, recognizing that our associations can affect our spiritual well‑being and witness.

God’s judgment and righteousness: The dramatic judgment upon the rebels serves as a reminder of God’s holiness, justice, and the seriousness of sin. It reinforces the truth that God will ultimately hold every individual accountable for their actions.
