Numbers 18:14
Every thing devoted in Israel shall be thine.
Numbers 18:14 (KJV)
Context
God spoke these words to Aaron the high priest and his sons. Numbers 18 gives the rules for supporting the priests and Levites who served at the tabernacle. Unlike the other tribes, they received no land as their inheritance. Instead, God gave them portions of the offerings brought by the people.
Meaning
The word “devoted” translates a Hebrew term (cherem) that means something set apart completely for the Lord. Such things were often promised by a vow or oath. Once devoted, they could not be used for common purposes or redeemed. They belonged wholly to God, and He gave them to the priests for their service.
This verse teaches that what is fully consecrated to God becomes the portion of His appointed servants. The priests received these dedicated gifts to sustain them as they cared for the tabernacle. This was not a small privilege; it was a holy provision that allowed them to focus on their sacred duties.
Biblical connections
Numbers 18:8-20 describes the full system of priestly support, including the most holy offerings, wave offerings, heave offerings, and firstfruits. The Levites received the tithes, while the priests received the devoted things. This arrangement taught Israel to honor God with their best and to support those who ministered before Him.
The New Testament carries this principle forward. In 1 Corinthians 9:13-14, Paul explains that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel, just as the priests lived from the temple offerings. The same care for God’s servants continues in the church.
Application
God still provides for those who serve Him through the faithful giving of His people. When believers give generously and with reverence, they enable ministers to devote themselves to teaching, prayer, and care for the congregation. This verse encourages God’s people to give their best, not their leftovers, to the Lord’s work.
It also reminds every believer that what is devoted to God is sacred. A promise made to the Lord should be kept carefully. Honoring God with our gifts and our words reflects a heart that takes Him seriously.
Reflection
God’s provision for the priests shows His tender care for those who serve Him. He did not leave them to struggle; He built their support into the worship life of Israel. This same God watches over His servants today. He invites His people to participate in His work by giving cheerfully and faithfully, trusting that He will supply every need.
