Numbers 18:3

And they shall keep thy charge, and the charge of all the tabernacle: only they shall not come nigh the vessels of the sanctuary and the altar, that neither they, nor ye also, die.

Numbers 18:3 (KJV)

God speaks directly to Aaron in Numbers 18, assigning duties to the tribe of Levi. The Levites are chosen to assist the priests, Aaron and his sons, in the service of the tabernacle. This verse defines their role and its limits.

The command to “keep thy charge, and the charge of all the tabernacle” means the Levites must guard and maintain the sacred tent and its furnishings. Their duties include setting up, taking down, and transporting the tabernacle during Israel’s journey, and ensuring no unclean person enters or removes anything. They were responsible for all the work needed in the tent, attending to the obligation of Aaron and the obligation of the whole tabernacle. Yet a clear boundary is set: they must not come near the sanctuary’s vessels or the altar. Approaching these holy items would bring death to both the Levites and the priests. This warning shows how seriously God regards the holiness of His worship. The severity of the penalty underscores that God has specific roles and boundaries in His service, and faithfulness means operating within those divinely appointed limits.

The restriction echoes the pattern of holiness seen throughout the law. Only the priests could handle the most sacred objects, and even they had to follow strict rules. The Levites’ delegated service points to the order God established for approaching Him, a theme later fulfilled in Christ, who grants believers direct access to God. This structure also highlights the principle of reverence and obedience in approaching the things of God.

God gives each believer specific responsibilities and boundaries. Faithfulness means serving wholeheartedly within the role He assigns, not seeking a position He has not given. The Levites’ careful obedience reminds us to treat God’s work with reverence and to honor the order He has set. Their commitment to their designated tasks serves as a reminder of the importance of faithfully serving God in the roles He has entrusted to us, whether big or small.

The verse calls us to examine our own service. Do we serve with the same care and respect for God’s holiness? The Levites’ example encourages us to embrace our God-given tasks, however small, and to perform them with diligence and awe.
