Numbers 21:11

And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ije–abarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.

Numbers 21:11 (KJV)

Numbers 21:11 records a single step in Israel’s long wilderness journey from Egypt toward the Promised Land. The people had just left Oboth and set up camp at Ije-abarim, a place in the wilderness east of Moab, toward the sunrise. This verse is part of a larger itinerary that shows the Lord leading His people stage by stage, even through places that seem ordinary or obscure.

The Book of Numbers, the fourth book of the Torah, tells the story of Israel’s forty years in the desert. It includes their victories, their failures, and the constant evidence of God’s care. This particular travel note appears after the account of the bronze serpent, where the people complained, were judged, and then received mercy. Now the journey resumes, and the text simply records where they went next.

Oboth was one of the campsites along the route, likely located in the region of modern Jordan. Ije-abarim is not precisely identified today, but it is generally understood to lie in the same area, east of Moabite territory. The phrase “toward the sunrising” means eastward, indicating the direction of their travel.

The wilderness here is the vast, harsh desert that Israel crossed. It was a place of testing, but also a place where the people learned to depend on God for water, food, and protection. The verse emphasizes the nomadic nature of their existence: they were always moving, always following the Lord’s leading.

The parallel account in Numbers 33:44 confirms that Israel departed from Oboth and pitched in Ije-abarim, on the border of Moab. This cross-reference helps locate the event and shows that the biblical record is consistent.

This brief verse reminds us that God guides His people step by step. The Israelites did not always know what lay ahead, but they moved when God moved. In our own lives, we may face seasons of waiting or travel through difficult places, yet we can trust that the Lord is leading us with purpose.

The wilderness was not a place of comfort, but it was a place of dependence. When the path seems uncertain, we can look back at how God provided for Israel and trust that He will provide for us. Their perseverance encourages us to keep going, knowing that God is faithful even in transition.

Numbers 21:11 may seem like a simple travel note, but it is part of a larger story of redemption. Every campsite, every movement, and every hardship was under God’s watchful eye. The same God who led Israel through the wilderness is with us today, guiding us toward His promises.
