Numbers 21:3

And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.

Numbers 21:3 (KJV)

The book of Numbers tells of Israel’s journey through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. By Numbers 21, the people had wandered for many years because of disobedience and lack of faith. Yet this chapter records their progress toward Canaan. In the previous verse, Israel made a vow: if God would deliver the Canaanites into their hands, they would utterly destroy their cities. Numbers 21:3 records God’s answer to that vow.

The verse begins, “And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel.” This shows that the people cried out to God, and in His mercy He responded. Despite their frequent complaints and rebellion, God remained faithful and listened to their plea. He delivered the Canaanites into Israel’s hands, and the people utterly destroyed them and their cities. The name “Hormah” means “destruction” or “devotion.” It signified that the Canaanites were completely defeated and devoted to God in judgment. The naming served as a lasting memorial of God’s deliverance and His judgment on the wickedness of the Canaanites.

This event connects to God’s earlier promise to give Abraham’s descendants the land of Canaan. It also shows the seriousness of God’s holiness. The complete destruction of the Canaanites was not random violence; it was judgment on their idolatry and sin. Israel’s obedience to God’s command to fully remove the Canaanites was part of their covenant relationship with Him. The same God who judged the Canaanites also showed mercy to Israel when they cried out, revealing both His justice and His compassion.

We can learn from this that even in our moments of weakness, doubt, and disobedience, God is ready to listen. He is compassionate and loving, and He answers sincere prayers. We should not hesitate to bring our concerns before Him. When we trust in God and follow His leading, He provides the strength and victory we need. Our obstacles and enemies are ultimately overcome by God’s power, not by our own abilities. The naming of Hormah also warns us to remain faithful to God and avoid being influenced by sinful practices in the world around us.

God’s faithfulness in Numbers 21:3 encourages us to trust in His power and to stay faithful in our relationship with Him. He is always ready to hear our voice and provide for our needs. Yet the complete destruction at Hormah reminds us that God takes sin seriously. He calls His people to wholehearted obedience, not partial commitment. As we face our own battles, we can cry out to God, knowing that He hears and acts on behalf of His people.
