Numbers 22:1

And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.

Numbers 22:1 (KJV)

The book of Numbers, the fourth book of the Bible, records the journey of the Israelites from Mount Sinai to the border of the Promised Land. After their liberation from Egypt, the people spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness because of disobedience and lack of faith. Numbers 22:1 marks a significant milestone: the children of Israel set forward from their previous location and pitched their camp in the plains of Moab, on the eastern side of the Jordan River opposite Jericho.

The Hebrew verb translated “pitched” conveys the idea of encamping or settling temporarily, indicating a deliberate stop in their march. The plains of Moab were within the territory of Moab, one of the neighbouring nations, and this area became the staging ground for the events recorded in Numbers 22–36, including Balaam’s oracles and the final instructions before entering Canaan. The mention of Jericho, a city west of the Jordan, highlights their proximity to the Promised Land and the imminent conquest. The phrase “on this side Jordan” reflects the perspective of the writer, standing east of the Jordan; other translations render it “beyond the Jordan” or “east of the Jordan.“

This verse sets the scene for the narrative that follows, where the Moabite king Balak, fearing Israel’s numbers, seeks to hire Balaam to curse them (Numbers 22:2-6). The plains of Moab are also the location where Moses will deliver his final addresses in Deuteronomy, emphasizing this encampment as a place of preparation and covenant renewal.

The Israelites’ arrival at the plains of Moab teaches us the importance of obedience to God’s instructions. Each step forward was a result of their willingness to follow God’s guidance. As believers, we should be attentive to God’s leading and obedient to His Word to make progress in our spiritual journey.

The 40 years in the wilderness highlight the importance of God’s timing. Sometimes God may delay our progress to refine our character, strengthen our faith, or prepare us for future challenges. It is crucial to trust in God’s perfect timing, even when we experience delays or setbacks.

Despite the challenges and delays, God remained faithful to His promise to bring the Israelites to the land He had sworn to give to their forefathers. Their arrival at the plains of Moab is a reminder of God’s faithfulness. We can rely on Him and trust in His faithfulness, even when circumstances seem uncertain.

Numbers 22:1 marks an important point in the Israelites’ journey as they approach the borders of the Promised Land. It reminds us of the significance of obedience, God’s timing, and His unwavering faithfulness. As we reflect on this verse, we can apply these lessons to our own lives, trusting in God’s guidance and faithfulness as we progress in our spiritual journey.
