Numbers 24:2

And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.

Numbers 24:2 (KJV)

Balaam was a non-Israelite prophet hired by Balak, king of Moab, to curse Israel. Earlier he practiced divination, but here he lifts his eyes and sees the camp arranged in orderly tribes, as God commanded in Numbers 2:1-34. That sight prepares him for what God will do.

When Balaam “lifted up his eyes,” he saw Israel “abiding in his tents according to their tribes.” The people were peaceful, united, and organized. This was not a random view; it displayed God’s order and care. Then “the spirit of God came upon him.” This was not saving grace or personal holiness, but a special gift of prophecy, as the Targums of Onkelos and Jonathan also indicate. God’s Spirit took control of Balaam’s words, so he could only speak what God gave him. The Spirit’s coming on Balaam, despite his pagan background, shows that God can use anyone to fulfill His purposes.

The orderly camp directly reflects God’s command in Numbers 2, where each tribe had its place. That order showed God’s blessing on Israel. The sight made a deep impression on Balaam, and the Spirit compelled him to bless rather than curse. This event also sets the stage for his later prophecy of the Star of Jacob in Numbers 24:17.

God’s sovereignty is clear here. Balak wanted curses, but God turned them into blessings. No human plan can stop God’s purpose. Also, God’s Spirit is not limited to one nation or group; He can speak through anyone to accomplish His will. We should trust that God is in control, even when others intend harm. He can overrule the plans of enemies and use them for our good.

This verse reminds us that God sees His people as precious and ordered. He watches over them and can defend them without human help. When we face opposition, we can rest in God’s power. He is able to change the words of our enemies into blessings for us.
