The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ wilderness journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In Numbers 25 the people had settled in the plains of Moab, where the Moabite king Balak, fearing the Israelites’ numbers, had first tried to curse them through the prophet Balaam, only for God to turn the curses into blessings. Frustrated, Balak turned to another strategy: he allied with the Midianites to entice the Israelites into sin and provoke God’s anger.
Historical Background
The Midianites were a neighbouring nomadic tribe living east of Moab. The Israelites had previously encountered them during the exodus from Egypt. Together with Moabite women, the Midianites played a role in leading the Israelites astray by tempting them to worship foreign gods (Numbers 25:1‑2).
The Israelites’ Sin
While staying in the plains of Moab, the Israelites indulged in sexual immorality with Moabite women and worshiped their gods, directly violating God’s commandments and betraying their covenant relationship with Him (Numbers 25:1‑2).
God’s Judgment
In response, God’s anger burned against the people. He commanded Moses to take the leaders and execute them publicly as judgment (Numbers 25:4‑5). During this time an Israelite man brought a Midianite woman into his tent, openly defying God’s command. Phinehas, the grandson of Aaron, zealously killed both the Israelite man and the Midianite woman with a spear (Numbers 25:6‑8).
God’s Covenant of Peace
God commended Phinehas for his zeal in upholding holiness (Numbers 25:10‑13) and established a covenant of peace with him and his descendants, promising that they would forever hold the priesthood and receive His blessing (Numbers 25:12‑13).
Instruction to Vex and Smite the Midianites
Following these events, God instructed Moses to take revenge on the Midianites for their role in leading Israel into sin (Numbers 25:16‑18). The Israelites were to go to war against the Midianites and completely destroy them as punishment.

The account in Numbers 25:17 reminds believers of the serious consequences of disobedience and sin. God expects His people to remain faithful and not be led astray by worldly influences. The narrative also highlights the importance of zealously upholding God’s holiness and standing against sinful behavior.
